Instant Web Content Recognition Technology to Ensure Safe Internet Access for French Students
Portland, Ore, Feb. 17, 2000 - RuleSpace LLC, the leader in automated web content recognition, today announced that France Telecom, the world's fourth largest telecommunications carrier, has selected RuleSpace's technology to ensure safe Internet access for thousands of academic institutions in France as part of its Scol@gora project. RuleSpace's technology provides instant recognition of inappropriate web content enabling France Telecom to filter out objectionable material such as pornography, weapons and hate speech in real-time as students surf the Internet.
The Scol@gora offering currently boasts 27,000 academic institutions connected through the program, including 80% of France's high schools and middle schools, 20% of France's elementary schools and 5% of the country's kindergartens. These figures represent the leading share of the country's academic Internet access market.
"With Internet access in schools becoming more mainstream, parents and teachers are calling for better control of what students can view on the Web," stated Michel Dana, technical director, France Telecom Education. "RuleSpace's use of technology to recognize web sites not suitable for children is an intelligent approach. We found their solution to be the most effective and scalable - RuleSpace efficiently handles the tremendous traffic of the program."
"Our technology is tailor-made for the large scale, real-time analysis of Internet content," commented Charlie Kawasaki, president and CEO of RuleSpace. "France Telecom's selection of this technology ensures that French students are afforded industrial-strength, reliable protection against inappropriate content."
RuleSpace's Technology
RuleSpace's technology automatically and accurately infers the meaning of web pages in real-time through analysis of several attributes, including text, page structure and a page's network associations, to arrive at a decision based on the page's overall context. The power of this patent-pending technology stems from its ability to categorize digital information by example to create a set of variables that capture the statistical nature of a content category, called a "rulespace." The technology can then automatically and accurately identify instances of these categories, or "rulespaces," as they are encountered in real-time, enabling the quick and accurate analysis of massive amounts of data in a fraction of the time it would take for manual review.
