Instant Web Content Recognition Technology to Ensure the Delivery of the Right Information to the Right Audience

LAS VEGAS, (May 8, 2000) Networld Interop, booth #7931 South Hall - RuleSpace, LLC, the leader in instant Web content recognition, today announced it is categorizing the World Wide Web. The company's Contexion™ Services provides automated categorization of Web content for Internet applications and services, enabling network access vendors, online marketers, portals and dot-coms to deliver more relevant content and keep pace with the explosion of the Web. The speed and scalability of RuleSpace's Contexion Services addresses the ever-increasing problems of crude Internet filtering, irrelevant search engine results, poor content discovery and seemingly random banner ad placement.

"RuleSpace provides the Internet community with a scalable, cost-effective solution that solves the problem of managing information on the Web," stated Amit Pandey, director of NetCache for Network Appliance. "Their progress in effectively categorizing the Web shows that the tools to instantly recognize Web content are here. When combined with the ICAP protocol, categorization will be available to any network server."

ICAP is an open protocol that enables communication between edge content devices, such as Web caches, and application servers that modify content for the edge content device. The ICAP Forum is hosted by Akamai Technologies and Network Appliance and is joined by leading content delivery service providers, application developers and Internet infrastructure companies.

"Until now, the only way to know what a Web page contained was to have a human manually classify its contents or rely on crude keyword-based technologies," stated Charlie Kawasaki, president and CEO of RuleSpace. "It's a result of how the Web was architected. A page's URL tells you where the page is located. It doesn't tell you what that page contains. Now, networking applications and online services have a source of categorization information integrated within the Internet infrastructure that is very fast and cost-effective. RuleSpace is answering the World Wide What."

Contexion Services

Contexion Services instantly recognizes Web content and facilitates the delivery of relevant Web information. Contexion Services delivers the following benefits to the Internet community:

For network access vendors:

Contexion Services enhances existing network access products and services by enabling precise, scalable Internet filtering and network caching through instant Web content recognition.

For online marketers:

Contexion Services enables more targeted online advertising and promotion by dynamically recognizing the meaning of Web content and facilitating the delivery of relevant marketing messages.

For portals and dot-coms:

Contexion Services enables the automated screening of inappropriate material for a "safe" Internet experience for family-friendly portals and affinity sites.

Contexion Services enables portals to attract and retain customers by delivering more meaningful information through facilitating vertical search and content discovery.

The Contexion Approach

Contexion uses two complementary techniques for categorizing the Web: content and context analysis. The content analysis component of Contexion examines all textual attributes of an incoming Web page in real-time including words, phrases, meta data and page structure. Once the attributes have been recognized, they are compared to a "rulespace" -- a unique set of defining attributes for each category created by RuleSpace's neural networks.

If the attributes of the Web page resemble those of the rulespace, the page is classified as a member of that specific category. Rulespaces are integrated within an application, enabling the quick and precise analysis of massive amounts of live data in a fraction of the time it would take for manual review.

The second technique, context analysis, infers the category rating of a Web page through association to its subdirectory and parent Web site. Web pages themselves often do not contain enough text to resolve the natural ambiguities of words. To address this challenge, Contexion continually categorizes the Web offline to determine the category ratings of all known Web sites and high-level subdirectories. These ratings provide context for any Web page. The Category Name Server, which stores these ratings, currently contains millions of pre-categorized Web sites - effectively representing the entire Web. The combination of both techniques-content and context analysis - results in instant Web content recognition, providing scalable, precise categorization of all Web content for Internet applications and services.

Implementation

Contexion Services can be implemented in three ways:

Embedded Analysis - Embedded implementations of Contexion Services enable the real-time analysis of Web content as it is encountered. This approach is appropriate for applications that require analysis of personalized pages and other dynamically created content.

Online Lookup Service - With Online Lookup Service, rating requests are submitted to the Category Name Server via a network connection. Category ratings for the site or subdirectory are returned for each specific URL. Online Lookup Service enables categorization services to be easily incorporated with minimal overhead.

Combined - Implementing both Embedded Analysis and Online Lookup Service delivers Web content recognition with optimal performance and precision by considering Web content in the context of its site associations.
