Innovation Driving Next-Generation Internet Filtering and Parental Control Solutions

Portland, Ore. - July 24, 2001 - RuleSpace, LLC, the leading provider of content recognition technology, today announced that the US Patent Office has granted the company a patent for its unique methods of categorizing digital content in real-time data streams. These methods automatically categorize content such as web pages pertaining to pornography, illicit drugs, or hate-mongering subject matter.

RuleSpace technology addresses the immediate challenges facing all Internet filtering and parental control providers striving to deliver a safer Internet experience. By identifying inappropriate content in this automated manner, providers of web browsers, search engines, ISP networks, firewalls and other network access solutions can now keep pace with the millions of new web pages that are created every day, more broadly scour the Web in search of objectionable material and address web content that is created on-the-fly by personalized pages and search engines.

US Patent 6,266,664 protects RuleSpace's invention that first characterizes a specific category of information content by example using neural networks, and then efficiently and accurately identifies instances of that category in real-time, enabling a new class of highly scalable applications that filter, classify, prioritize, or otherwise manage digital content.

"This patent validates our position as a pioneer in the area of automated content categorization and Internet filtering technology," said Charlie Kawasaki, president and CEO, RuleSpace. "Our technology is powering the next generation of content filtering today - and with the protection of this patent, if companies want to offer real-time content recognition solutions they will need to employ Contexion Services from RuleSpace."

About the Patent

The key innovation protected within the patent is the use of neural networks in assessing the subject category of text-based digital content. In RuleSpace's process, a "target" attribute set of characteristics, such as natural language words and/or phrases, is formed using statistical analysis on samples of "training data." These samples are divided into two types - one set characterized as "containing" the selected category of information content, and another set of samples characterized as "not containing" the selected category.

Applying correlation analysis to the "training data" refines the set of attributes. Neural-network systems adaptively assign relative weights to each of the characteristics in the attribute set. The result of the process is the creation of a "category model," which is a highly predictive, statistical representation of the category of interest used to efficiently categorize digital content encountered within a real-time data stream.

All of the elements and processes protected by this patent are key components of RuleSpace's Contexion Services family of products.

About Contexion Services

A break-through approach to content recognition, Contexion Services' neural network technology provides the most accurate recognition of web content available by analyzing both the words on a page and the context in which they are used. The service also provides the broadest web coverage possible through the largest, continuously updated database of inappropriate web content available today. In addition, Contexion Services supports eight languages and is capable of recognizing dynamically generated web pages.
